Appendix 5 to Local History, Local Complexities: ULL Writing Program Outcomes Aligned with Habits of Mind in the “Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing”

This is an appendix to Local History, Local Complexities: The First-Year Writing Curriculum at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

In this table, I have matched one or two habits of mind from the Framework with each of our writing program outcomes and explained how the habit(s) apply to each writing outcome.

Outcome

Habit(s) of Mind (from the Framework statement)

Engage in writing as a recursive process

Creativity – the ability to use novel approaches for generating, investigating, and representing ideas.

Persistence – the ability to sustain interest in and attention to short- and long-term projects.

Recognize the structures of argument

Metacognition – the ability to reflect on one’s own thinking as well as on the individual and cultural processes used to structure knowledge.

Use writing and reading for learning, thinking, and communicating

Curiosity – the desire to know more about the world.

Respond to the needs of various audiences

Responsibility – the ability to take ownership of one’s actions and understand the consequences of those actions for oneself and others.

Discuss appropriate voice, tone, and level of formality

Flexibility – the ability to adapt to situations, expectations, or demands.

Integrate their ideas with those of others

Openness – the willingness to consider new ways of being and thinking in the world.

Engagement – a sense of investment and involvement in learning.

Note: Most of our writing program's outcomes are from the WPA (Council of Writing Program Administrators) Outcomes Statement for First-Year Composition; they also contributed to the Framework.
